The Surf

The Surf is a custom build based on the contour of another custom build named Taha.

As the name implies: This guitar follows the aesthetics of the fifties, the combination of the seafoam green finish and the nickel-plated hardware reminds you on old American cars. The mahogany neck is from an old church bench, the beautiful rosewood fretboard sets a good contrast.

The Surf sounds like surf, too. The Seymour Duncan Psyclone humbuckers have a really nice twang but sound bold, too. The customer wanted a 9-42 set of strings, that fit this guitar surprisingly good. Usually I prefer much heavier strings, but not in this case. I described the tone with some flowery words that came to my mind: this guitar sounds like trembling knees: elastic and bold, but not fat; somehow twangy but not sharp. To me, it sounds very special and the strings fit perfectly.

The wiring is simple. The 3-way-toggle does what it usually does and we have a master volume and a master tone pot. The body is made of light meranti that is curved in one way, which makes it more elegant than the usual flat tops.

  • Body: meranti, curved
  • Neck: mahogany, 2 pieces
  • Fretboard: rosewood
  • Machines: Schaller M6 Lock
  • Bridge: Schaller 3D
  • Pickups: Seymour Duncan Psyclone Neck&Bridge
